The crafting of steel is only possible because of the magical properties of its component metals. The more even the quantities, the stronger the resulting steel. Steel is a silvery-white metal alloy that results from melding close amounts of iron and corundum together.

Though uncommon, corundum can be found in all regions of Tamriel.Ĭorundum gets its name from the word 'conundrum', which is Cyrodilic for 'puzzle', as it is commonly alloyed with iron to be used in locks and reinforced lockpicks. Because of magic's tendency to metalize corundum, crystalline gemstone specimens such as ruby and sapphire occur rather rarely in nature. It is similar in chemical composition to gemstone corundum, only reinforced through naturally-occurring alteration magic. When the ratio of iron to corundum is near 1:1, it may be referred to as steel, an exceptional alloy that is more durable the more exactly even the ratio is.Ĭorundum isn't a proper metal, but a mineral composed of several other metals that maintains certain metallic properties. More durable, battle-fit armor can be produced by alloying it with other metals, particularly metallic corundum. For these reasons, it is the most common type of metal to be used in the crafting of armors.

It is relatively soft and malleable, but also cheap to obtain because of the low-quality armor, blades and utility tools (such as kitchenware) that it can be smithed to produce. Iron is a dull, dark-colored metal and one of the most abundant metals found all across Tamriel.
